Tips for Teaching your Teen about Road Safety

Tips for Teaching your Teen about Road SafetyIf you have a teen who is about to or has recently received their learner's permit you may find yourself suffering from excessive stress and worry. Having your child behind the wheel can be scary, but at one point, you were the one getting in the driver's seat for the first time. It is important to teach your children about the importance of road safety, for their sake and yours. Aside from enrolling them in a quality driver's education course be sure to talk to them about the following.

Tell them about first hand experiences

The best examples you can provide about the dangers of the road are ones that happened to you. Your children care about you and will not like hearing about accidents that you've been involved in or affected by. While you don't want to scare them off the road, you want them to know how important it is to pay attention to all aspects of the road while in control of the vehicle.

Drive at night with them

It has been shown that more accidents occur at night. This makes sense, seeing as there is less visibility and glares from oncoming headlights can make it difficult to follow the road, especially in the rain. Be sure to take your student driver out for many hours of driving at night so that they feel comfortable to take the wheel on their own when the time comes.

Make sure they know never to use their cell phone and drive

One of the most important things to talk to your teen drive about is the use of their cell phone or other device while driving. In many states it is now illegal to even hold a cell phone in your hand while driving, and for good reason. Texting and driving or using the phone in any other sort of way can be extremely distracting, resulting in a collision.

Talk to them about insurance costs

Whether you will be paying for your child's insurance or not you need to inform them about insurance, what it means and what it costs. They need to know that being a good driver and staying out of accidents will help lower the cost of their insurance over time.

Make rules and stick to them

When you make rules about driving stick them and if they are broken there needs to be consequences. This includes how many people, if any, your teen should be allowed to have in the car when they first start driving, how late they can be out with the car and others.

It's up to you to best prepare your teen for their time behind the wheel. A better educated driver is less likely to be involved in an accident, but it isn't impossible to avoid, regardless of how good of a driver they are.
