FAQ: Classic Car Auto Body Repair

If you drive a classic car or truck or if you're in the process of restoring one you more than likely have a thing for beautiful vehicles and do it by choice. The repair process for collector car bodies can be different from modern autos, as the materials and finishes of vehicles have evolved substantially over the years. These are a few basic questions many people have when searching for classic car auto body repair, especially when conducting restorations. If you have any other questions be sure to reach out to your local auto restoration facility.

What makes classic auto body repair different from modern auto body repair?

Cars and trucks of yesteryear were constructed quite a bit different from those today. From the frame up the materials that classics roll with will vary on almost a year to year basis. Today's vehicles are hard bodied vehicles trimmed most often with plastic. Classic cars are all metal and require extensive knowledge of metalworking in order to remove imperfections in the numerous lines that vintage vehicles carry.

How is rust dealt with?

Rust is a huge problem for collector cars, especially if they've been sitting untouched for years and years. There are a few different types of rust and how the rust damage is handled will vary based on the issues your particular vehicle is facing.

  • Surface rust - Surface rust is a topical coating of rust. It may be widespread or focused on a certain area, but one thing's certain, it's going to get worse if not taken care of. Surface rust can generally be sanded away and the area primed over then painted.
  • Rust through - If the rust has caused holes to appear in the body of your vehicle than the rusted area will need to be cut out and new metal welded in.

I don't want to use body filler, how will dents be repaired?

To avoid using plastic body filler on your classic the dent can be drilled and pulled out and liquid metal can be used to fill any imperfections. The area will be sanded smooth prior to paintwork.

Can classic auto colors be recreated for painting?

A professional body shop will be able to match any desired color using computer color match technology.

If you have a classic car in need of body repair or painting be sure to find an auto body repair shop that will ensure the shop is done right.
