Auto Body Repair: It's Done by the Shop of your Choice

There are several misconceptions about the legalities of filing a claim with your insurance company following an auto accident. The first is that you need to get multiple quotes from a certain number of collision repair centers, and second, that you must use an auto body repair shop that is recommended by your insurance company. Both of these are false claims. You have the legal right to choose the auto body shop of your choice and you only have to get a single quote!

Insurance companies want you to work with auto body shops that they recommend generally because of some sort of financial agreement that saves the insurance company money. But it is up to you who completes the repairs on your vehicle and your insurance company must pay for all repairs that your policy covers. However, be sure you understand your insurance policy before bringing your vehicle to a shop so you are completely aware of what is covered.

Insurance companies may also ask you to get multiple quotes, but this is so they can use the information to send you to the shop that quoted the lowest price, meaning it's less of a cost for them. The law is on your side in regard to this as well; there is nothing stating you need to get any more than a single estimate. This doesn't mean that it isn't in your best judgement to do so. You may want to get several estimates in order to get the best evaluation of the damage done to your vehicle, not necessarily because of the price. Differences in estimates are fairly common but a lower quote will likely not include all of the necessary services that your vehicle needs in order to be completely repaired. If your insurance company wants to have their own estimator evaluate the damage it is OK to let them know the car is at a certain auto body shop and they can go to that location to conduct their review.

Once you select a collision repair shop of your choice the shop's representatives will be able to work with your insurance company to ensure all the necessary repairs are completed under your policy.
