What to do After an Auto Accident

What to do After an Auto AccidentEvery time you get behind the wheel it is with understanding that accidents can happen. Car wrecks can be absolutely horrifying, even at the slowest of speeds. So while not all accidents can be prevented it is possible to be prepared for one. If you're involved in car wreck follow these simple steps to ensure the aftermath of the accident goes smoothly and so you can quickly put the incident in the rearview mirror.

Check for Injuries

The very first thing that should be done immediately following a collision is an injury assessment for yourself, your passengers and those in other vehicles involved. If anyone requests an ambulance, or if it is obvious an ambulance should be sent, call 911 right away.

Contact the Police

Even if there are no serious injuries it is important to call the police following an auto accident. This will give you a chance to file a police report, which will serve as valuable evidence for your insurance company. Having the police present will also help ensure nobody leaves the scene until all necessary information has been collected.

Gather Evidence

Snap some photos of the scene from all angles using your camera phone or other digital camera. Also photograph other drivers' insurance cards and driver's licenses. All of this will help your insurance company determine fault and so that you can collect reimbursement.

Notify Your Insurance Company

Before leaving the accident scene call your insurance company to ensure you have collected everything you need in order to properly file a claim with them. When it is convenient and legal take all of your collected evidence, including the police report, witness statements and any photographs to your insurance company.

Find a Great Auto Body Repair Shop

Once you file a claim your insurance company will probably provide you with a list of prefered body shops that it likes to work with.
