How is Dent Repair Completed?

When it comes to cars few things can be as frustrating as your vehicle receiving a nice new dent. They are unsightly and often are the result of some sort of run in with another vehicle or object. Hopefully it wasn't your fault! If your vehicle has fallen victim to a new dent it is important to allow a professional auto body technician inspect the damage to ensure there is no other hidden damage that has occurred. A certified technician should also be trusted to perform dent repair to ensure the vehicle is properly returned to its pre-accident condition. Depending on the type of dent the repair process may vary.

Paintless Dent Repair

If the vehicle has suffered a dent that has not damaged the paint it may be able to be repaired using a technique called paintless dent removal. This can be performed on dents that occur on parts of the body that can be accessed from their backside, such as doors, hoods and fenders. This technique involves the technician using special tools to tap the dent out from the backside until it is returned to its original look. This often saves the vehicle owner time and money.

Body Filler

Sometimes the best way to fix a ding or dent is to use a special body filler material. This is best for small dents that can't be repaired using paintless dent removal. In order to fix dents with filler the technician will fill the dent and then sand the area smooth, finally painting the area to match the rest of the vehicle.

Pulling a Dent

If a larger dent has occurred it may be necessary for the technician to perform a method of repair that involves drilling a hole in the center of the dent and inserting a special tool that allows them to pull the dent out. Following the pulling the technician will fill the hole and smooth the area with filler before the car's damaged area is painted.

Body Panel Replacement

Sometimes the most cost effective method of repairing damage is simply replacing the panel that has been dented. This generally means that the body panel has been heavily trashed and can't be repaired. This may be the case for doors, bumpers, fenders and other parts of the body that are interchangeable.
